Animated A-Z: Kiting

Quite a cute and simple one for this letter, apparently there aren’t many adjectives beginning with K! So here’s my 11th letter, K for Kite.

kite

I wanted to try and get this looking slightly realistic with the string getting slack as the kite loses hight. It’s quite subtle but I think it works well! I only used a couple of effects on this, Wave Warp for the strings, and Gaussian Blur for the cloud.

It took me a while to figure out an idea for this one, but once I decided and got into the animation it didn’t really take me long at all, about two hours. I’ve been doing a lot more animation work in the office, so hopefully I’ll learn even more tricks along the way!

Animated A-Z: Jellyfish

This is probably the best animation I’ve done, but coincidentally it’s probably the least ‘alphabet like’ of any of the letters! It’s J for Jellyfish!

Jellyfish

So I’m so pleased with this animation. Bonus points if you’ve already spotted the two cheeky fish! The hardest part of this animation was getting it to loop, but I managed it in the end. This is one of the few animations I’ve done where I only worked on one idea the entire time, and it came out how I imagined!

I used two effects on this, Wave Warp and Glow. It took quite a bit of fiddling around to get it flowing nicely, but I’m so happy with how it turned out. So nice and floaty!

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta!

Yesterday Nic and I took a trip to Bristol to go to the hot air balloon fiesta! It’s an event I’ve been meaning to go to for the longest of times… Last weekend I happened to enquire about the date and found out it was the following Sunday. We had that day free, so we thought, why the hell not?! I live my life by doing whatever makes me and Nic happy, and jumping in the car with our cameras at the ready is certainly high up on the happy list!

Here’s my favourite shots that I took yesterday on my Olympus E-500. Hope you like them!

Animated A-Z: Ignite

Say what? Two blog posts in one week? I am on fire! This weeks animated letter is I for Ignite, and it’s smoking…

Ignite

Okay, it’s not technically being ignited, but still, I’m happy! This weeks animation took me around 2/3 hours to complete. I used this flame tutorial for the basis and learnt a lot of good stuff along the way so I’d highly recommend checking the guy out!

I had a bit of a fluke with the looping. I was worried all the way through about how I was going to make it perfect, but then somehow it just.. was. I’m still not sure how it conveniently matched up, but I’m certainly not complaining! I’m very pleased with how the whole thing turned out, using effects is such an ‘easy’ way to get movement in animations. I’m looking forward to trying some more out on upcoming letters!

Animated A-Z: H2O

Filled up to the brim with water, it’s H for H2O!

H2O

And with that, I’m over a third of the way through my animated alphabet! I wanted to practise shape merging for this one, and a simple mask of the letter H. The hardest part of this one was how short it had to be, so the loop feels a bit rushed, but I’m happy with it over all; I can definitely see me using this technique again.

I love the bubbles, I think they turned out really well from such a simple idea. I’m also really enjoying using subtle gradients to give the animations a bit of depth! I’m definitely getting into a style now with these letters, ‘Phat Guy’ is a gorgeous font.

Animated A-Z: Glow

It’s another animated letter, a glowing hot G!

Glow

Man, this animation has taken me the longest so far. After working my way through two other failed attempts, Grow and Grim, I finally settled on Glow! This animation took me a total of about half an hour of fiddling, but it’s all the prep work that takes the longest amount of time. I’m hoping to spend more time on my upcoming letters as my diary seems to be calming down a bit in these next few weeks.

Animated A-Z: Float

Bobbing along the ocean, trying not to sink, it’s my next animated letter, F for Float!

Float.gif

Slightly delayed, but I’m pleased with this animation! It seems to be becoming a theme that I spend a long time on an animation which I end up scraping for something that takes me just over two hours. At the bottom you’ll see my original idea, the one I decided to scrap as it wasn’t ‘letter focused’ enough for my liking.

This week I wanted to practise more with my patterns and ‘natural’ feeling  of gravity. I need to learn more about this, some more research time definitely required… but I think I’ve got the cartoony look down? Maybe, guys? There’s always room for improvement…
