Animated A-Z: Zigzag

And that’s it, my last letter of my animated alphabet, Z for Zigzag!

Zigzag

This may have taken a while, but I got there in the end! I used a few different techniques that I’ve previously practised. The background is made up of two different shapes with three different repeaters. It’s actually one of my favourites I’ve done! For the z it’s three continuous lines with trim paths, with the outer two at 50% opacity. Finally the whole thing has a drop shadow after it was pre-composed so it wouldn’t overlap. The hardest thing was thinking up a word beginning with Z!

Animated A-Z: Yank

Off the stage with you – my penultimate letter of my animated alphabet, Y for Yank!

Yank

I cannot believe this project is nearing it’s end! This one is something I’ve had in my head for a long time. It has a number of very subtle things that I wanted to try out, like using alpha masks to keep the spotlights all in a line, making the hook go behind on the way in, but ‘around ‘ the Y on the way out, and the slight bend on the Y as it gets pulled off. All simple things that you wouldn’t really notice, but all together they make the difference!

Animated A-Z: X-Ray

Who knew that’s what it looked like inside? Letter 24, X for X-Ray!

XRay

I’ve had this one sussed since last year, so I’m really pleased with it! Quite simple but it does use a separate fixed place mask (alfa mask on the layer above) so that the later can move but the mask stays in the same place, a super handy thing to learn!

All in all it took a couple hours, one of my fastest as I knew exactly what I was going for from the start. Only two more to go!

Animated A-Z: Windy

We’re so close! Here’s a blustery number, W for Windy!

Windy

I love this animation, I think it’s totally adorable, and it’s exactly how I planned out from my first sketches of this letter. There’s over 30 individual leaves which has to be animated but it was definitely worth it in the end.

The whole thing took about 3 hours from start to finish, so not too bad! I started out with a Photoshop drawing that I imported into After Effects to animate the different elements after I changed all their anchor points. It was quite a simple animation, but with a few time consuming fiddly bits!

With 23 down, I only have 3 more letters to go! We’ll get there soon enough!

Animated A-Z: Night

The sun is setting and it’s nighttime for my 14th letter! It’s N for Night.

night

It’s a relatively simple one, but there were a few new techniques I picked up to crack this one. For the extended shadow I used a repeater on a duplicated N shape. It was about 120 repeats at 1px down from the one above, increasing to around 150 towards the end so the shadow continues to ‘grow’. I’m definitely going to use this again on future animations; it’s a lovely simple technique to just bring some excitement to a design. Both the shadow and the N have masks following the shape of the ‘mountain’, along with the tree shadows too, but this isn’t really too noticeable.

Something I did have trouble with was the quality. GIF’s only support up to 256 colours, and this animation uses a lot more than that! So when I came to export it, the whole thing looked pretty awful. I had to go back to my original After Effects file and cut down on the gradients I was originally using. But I’m a sucker for flat design, so it’s all cool!

Animated A-Z: Magnetize

Lots of M’s in this one! And it marks half way through my animated alphabet project. Here’s M for Magnetize!

magnetize

With an M Magnate, M background and little metal M’s, this animation is quite M heavy! I wanted a go at some different illustrator, so had a go at 3d flat design (if that’s a thing, I definitely might have just made that up). I think it looks good though, and works quite well with gravity, shadows and all that fun stuff.

I think I need to step it up a gear and get a bit more advanced in my animations, flee my comfort zone! So I’m off to do more research and learn some new tricks of the trade. Fingers crossed, I might even learn some new illustration skills whilst I’m there.

Animated A-Z: Lit Up

Today I’m lit up for the letter L, my 12th letter of my animated alphabet – nearly halfway!

litup

I think this is just adorable! For this animation I wanted to focus on the idea of the ‘L bulb’ really lighting up the space around itself. I wanted to show the filaments glowing as it lights up, and the reveal of the ‘wallpaper’ behind the light bulb.

Something else I’m pleased with the illustration style. I’m trying my best to step out of my comfort zone and practise with some different drawing techniques. This whole animation only took me around 2 hours to complete in one evening. It’s relatively simple though, just a lot of Glow Effects and masking to get the reveal just right.
